Timing:

Snow should move into the region this evening from southwest to Northeast making it to the  North shore and Boston area by 8pm and 9pm. On the onset temperatures could be warm enough to start as a mix. This is not due to the future mixing issues that will move from southeast to Northwest in SE Mass but to do with the marginal temperatures on the onset. The heavier precipitation will get it colder so that most in interior southern New England is snowing by 8 or 9pm. Precipitation should end from Southwest to Northeast Monday morning. Precipitation could continue for northern and eastern areas mid to late morning. The heaviest snowfall should happen around midnight into pre-dawn hours. Any snow falling in Southern New England after the sun is up looks to not accumulate to much but could still impact travel.

Snowfall.

Untitled1

A general 5 to 10 inches of snow looks to fall from southern Ct up into Eastern Massachusetts. The heaviest snow fall will be determined how far north the rain/snow line forms and where the heaviest bands of snow set up. Heaviest snowfall amounts will form a few miles  north and west of the snow/rain line The jackpot area in terms of snow could be any where in Eastern Massachusetts from 495/128 belt area to the area around the Cape Cod Canal.  There could be localized pockets of 10 to 12 inches within the 5 to 10 inch range. The furthest north I feel the snow/rain line could make it is the green line on the map but I am favoring it does not actually make it to that line and is not in the city of Boston but is just to the south and east of Boston. It also could not even make it that far inland and hugs the coastline.

Road conditions will deteriorate quickly this evening.

Level 3/4 road conditions  are anticipated for southern and eastern  Ct , RI,  up into Central Ma into eastern Ma. This is mainly for Sunday night with road conditions going down to level 3. Expect Moderate to heavy travel delays due to the weather in this region on top of any regular delays during the Monday morning rush hour.

Due to the bulk of the snow falling when its dark the worst of the visibility issues will be at night into the early part of the morning commute. The worst of the driving conditions will be midnight to around 8am. Expect many schools to cancel school over delays do not to the snow falling in the morning but what is on the ground. Especially in Eastern Mass down into Southern CT.

Colder temps follow for the rest of the week, a disturbance could send some snow showers to the region Tuesday night and again Wednesday. We will have to watch another system for the end of the week which could be in the form of snow or rain.
